It’s a family affair - donation of over 100 face shields, 100 percent hand made

Envirotect’s Operations Manager, Nigel Payne, has put his time in furlough to good use by making essential PPE for the NHS.

When Nigel was furloughed earlier in spring his wife Amanda readily found him a job.

Amanda mentioned that local schools and companies had been using laser cutters or 3D printers to make face shields.  With years of experience within the joinery industry Nigel’s technical mind got to work and he set up a workshop on his dining room table.  Nigel says “I made a jig with pieces of plywood and used a hot plate to heat up the plastic strips.  I then used a hot glue gun and double sided tape to assemble the pieces together”.

Nigel had looked at designs online, but they did not work for the materials he had to hand so he tweaked the designs slightly to incorporate the materials he had.

Amanda explains “I work for Barnado’s, who are affiliated to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Aylesbury and through my contacts we found a happy recipient for the donation: Oxford Health”.

The couple’s daughter Jasmin helped with assembling the shields and son Thomas delivered them to the trust’s designated collection point.

Thankfully the face shields were completed just in time as Nigel’s furlough was coming to an end and he will be returning to work at Envirotect.

Oxford Health gave A BIG THANK YOU to Nigel, Amanda, Jasmin and Thomas for their kind donation.

Annual door inspections could help prevent MRI service disruptions

Envirotect’s RF doors are designed to provide reliable, low maintenance service for use in the most demanding MRI facilities.  To minimise interruptions to services that can be caused by issues with an RF door and to extend its life, Envirotect offers annual inspection, servicing and repairs.

Annual inspections consist of a full examination of the whole RF door system including the general condition of the frame and door face, door seal, latch system, hinges, door closer and contact fingers.

Finger and gasket type doors require regular professional cleaning and lubrication to ensure maximum service life and correct operation.

Periodically the RF fingers or the gasket will require replacing to maintain the best shielding performance and Envirotect can now replace these parts on a range of doors.

Inspections can be scheduled around busy periods to avoid disruption and after the inspection the company will submit a proposal for approval if any repairs are required.  The company will also confirm any recommendations to enhance the service life of the RF door.

Independent tests can be arranged by Envirotect including RF attenuation, EMI survey, vibration survey and magnetic steel shielding calculations.  If enviro-Steel® magnetic shielding is required, the company can supply and install as required.

Shielding experts start work on one hundredth RF cage

Envirotect has secured an order for its 100th RF cage while celebrating another significant milestone; its 20th business anniversary.  Managing director Niven Smith said: I am thrilled by the fact that the company has reached its 20th anniversary and look forward to the coming year with real enthusiasm and huge optimism.”

The company says it is the only RF shield manufacturer in the UK that is member accredited and able to display the Made in Britain marque.  Wherever possible materials and suppliers originating in the UK are used, enabling faster manufacturing and delivery.

Since introducing RF shielding to the product portfolio Envirotect has offered a range of independent testing services including RF attenuation, EMI surveys and magnetic steel shielding calculations.  Where enviro-Steel® shielding is required, the company can supply and install to the magnet vendor’s specification.

Annual inspections, servicing and repairs on a wide range of RF doors are also available.  “Finger and gasket type doors require regular professional cleaning and lubrication to ensure maximum service life,” says Envirotect.  “Periodically the RF fingers or gasket will require replacing to maintain the best shielding performance and we can now replace these parts on a range of doors.”

Envirotect marks 20 years

Envirotect is celebrating 20 years in business, since its launch in 2000 by managing director Niven Smith.

The company has grown to become an established provider of structural radiation shielding to the medical, construction and engineering sectors throughout the UK and internationally.

Introducing RF cages with associated products including enviro-Steel® magnetic steel shielding, RF tests, door maintenance, filters and waveguides to the product range has led to a substantial increase in business; having begun with two members of staff, Envirotect now employs 15.

“I feel privileged to have been able to work with such an enthusiastic and hardworking team,” said Smith.  “Staff turnover is very low and the work ethic extremely high.  This has helped to provide the best service to our customers and built lasting relationships.  I would like to extend a huge thank you to our customers, suppliers and employees.”

Magnetic shielding reduces spread of Gauss line

Magnetic steel shielding such as enviro-Steel® may be required for MRI installations, depending on the type of magnet, field strength and location of the site.  The enviro-Steel® magnetic steel shielding is used to reduce the spread of the 0.5mT (5 Gauss) line of the magnetic field to protect sensitive medical equipment and minimise the risk to people with pacemakers and implants.  If the proposed location of the magnet allows the Gauss line to spread outside the room this can have serious repercussions to members of the public in this area.

Another factor to take into consideration is interference from the outside the MRI suite.  Moving objects with high levels of ferrous magnetic metals such as vehicles and lift shafts can cause interference to the operation of the MR scanner.  Introducing materials like enviro-Steel® contains the magnetic field and avoid interference.

Envirotect has registered enviro-Steel® as a trademark.

Growth of veterinary MRI increase demand for shielding

Envirotect reports an increase in requirements for its radiation and RF shielding products due to the growth of diagnostic imaging services within the veterinary and equine industry.

Envirotect recently worked on a project at The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre in Marlow, installing a copper RF shielded cage to house an MRI scanner.  A specially controlled environment needed to be created to ensure the magnet functions as designed.  Envirotect achieved this by forming an electrically sealed six-sided copper RF cage consisting of floor, ceiling, walls, control window and entrance door.

A Code 7 (3.15mm lead equivalent) radiation shielded observation window was also required for the Computed Tomography (CT) room.  Craftsmen manufactured the lead lined frame in their workshop before transporting to site for installation by the Envirotect team.

The Ralph is very much a passion- and vision-driven hospital founded on a strong organisational culture and authentic core values.   Hospital founder Shailen Jasani, a Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care specialist, helped to treat an adorable rescue cat called Ralph, after he had been hit by a car. Ralph shared a home with Shailen for two years before sadly passing away.

Shailen embarked on his journey to set up a new and very special veterinary referral centre, it felt only right that as a lasting tribute to the wonderful Ralph, the hospital be named in his honour.

Shailen’s vision is now a reality and Envirotect was enthralled to be part of such an interesting journey.

Envirotect have an extensive range of affordable radiation shielding products and have been working within the veterinary sector for many years.  Lead lined door sets incorporate a lead core throughout the frame, door, stops and architraves.  Doors can be supplied primed, veneered or with a wipe clean laminate.  Vision panels can be incorporated as required and come in various sizes.  Door Upgrades, also known as Door Skins, are available and is a cost effective option allowing veterinarians to upgrade existing doors with lead protection.  Large radiation shielded doors for equestrian facilities can also be manufactured.

Envirotect extend MR product range

Envirotect Limited has extended their range of MR products.  In addition to its copper RF shielded cage, Envirotect offers a range of filters and waveguides which come in standard sizes with other sizes available upon request.  Air conditioning waveguides are designed to allow air to enter and leave the cage through a suitable filter.  Medical gas waveguides are constructed of a copper pipe with a dielectric isolator to prevent grounding.  Each medical gas waveguide is pressure tested at a minimum of 150psi for at least two hours.   Standard electrical filters are 25amp single line tubular feed-through filters and are required in pairs.  Open waveguides are brass threaded pipe complete with two nuts to fix to the RF cage.

Envirotect can arrange independent testing services including RF attenuation, EMI survey, vibration survey and magnetic steel shielding calculations.  If magnetic steel shielding is required, the company can supply and install to the magnet vendors specification.

Envirotect can carry out annual inspections, servicing and repairs on manual ETS-Lingren RF doors, in addition to its own products.  Finger and gasket type doors require regular professional cleaning and lubrication to ensure maximum service life and correct operation, says Envirotect.  Periodically the RF fingers or the gasket will require replacing to maintain the best shielding performance and the company can now replace parts on a range of doors.

Dental practice finds perfect match with bespoke door

Envirotect Limited designs and manufacture high specification bespoke lead lined doors for use within the healthcare industry, dental practices, veterinary and equine facilities.

With an established client base each order is bespoke in terms of manufactured size, fixtures, fittings and colour.  All doors are available in a range of finishes and colours, allowing clients to brighten their interiors and enable areas to be zoned according to the colour of the doors.

For a recent project Envirotect matched a door finish within a remodelled dental practice in Oxford.  The contractor had specified a modern door finish in American black walnut veneer throughout the practice.  This did not include a shielded door and the contractor approached Envirotect.  The specification stated that as the OPG room had a different use to the rest of the dental practice the door could have a slightly different appearance.  Operations manager Nigel Payne spent time researching the veneer finish and found a near perfect match to the walnut cross grain, with v groove finish that had been used for all of the other internal doors.  The single radiation shielded Code 3 (1.32mm L/E) walnut finished door was manufactured in Envirotect’s workshop and was finished off with a framed vision panel.

Envirotect’s door sets are durable and easy to wipe clean.  Its radiation and RF shielding products includes lead lined plasterboards/plywood, door sets, screens, observation windows, cabinets, lead glass, lead vinyl and RF cages with associated products including RF tests and RF door maintenance.

Thank you message from Steve

As many of you know I have now retired from Envirotect and I would like to take a second to thank each and every one of your for helping to create such a satisfying and pleasant work environment.

As happy as I am to be moving on to the next chapter of my life, I cannot help but be a little sad that I will not be seeing you all on such a regular basis.  I’ve enjoyed (almost) every moment whilst working for Envirotect, from hilarious conversations and banter to the numerous staff parties and events.

But most of all I will miss working with such an efficient and competent team of individuals.  I am so proud of what we have accomplished over the years, and truly appreciate the support and guidance that was always available to me.

I received the below poem from a friend and I think it sums up my retirement plans quite well (I might have to work on the six pack!!!)

Throw out the alarm clock and put on your shoes,
Go walking or hiking, whatever you choose,
Tone up your six pack or pedal your bike,
Relax in the garden, just do what you like,
Take a break in Majorca, a month would be fine,
Swim sixty lengths you have plenty of time,
Take afternoon tea, watch a race or two,
Just enjoy your retirement, whatever you do.
