Room type – Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy Room

Brachytherapy is a form of cancer radiotherapy in which the source of radiation is placed (as by implantation as a seed, catheter or injection) in or close to the area being treated. As well as the treatment room itself, ancillary rooms such as preparation, toilets, and recovery bedrooms may also be required.

Shielding for Brachytherapy rooms can vary greatly. Previous contracts have ranged between 15 & 50mm of lead. The Radiation Protection Advisor for the hospital is responsible for advising the actual shielding required and this will depend on a multitude of factors.

Typical shielding components Brachytherapy rooms:

Bricks

Lead bricks

Due to the level of shielding required, walls are generally constructed from chevron interlocking blocks.

Brick room

These can be manufactured to produce walls up to 50mm of lead. The floor and ceiling may also require shielding depending on the structure and room location etc.

Envirotect can supply the complete package including construction of the walls.

Entrance Door Lead Lined

Lead lined entrance door

The entrance door may be either hinged or sliding depending on the shielding requirement.

Designers should also consider the powering and locking of heavy door sets.
